Project Goals
The goal for this project was to create signage for the Arboretum that makes sense of how they're designed and where they are placed in the location. Through the project overview I stayed on tasked on the Arboretum's needs and their target audience with user personas so that I know who I'm designing these signs for. Ultimately, providing information and improving wayfinding.
Research & Analysis
Research involved observational studies at the Humber Arboretum, guided tours, and inquiries about existing signage. Considerations included environmental factors such as weather resilience and visibility at different times of day.
Design process
Initial sketches helped to explore design concepts, leading to the development of a cohesive visual identity using Adobe Illustrator. Design choices, such as black backgrounds with white text, were made to ensure readability and branding consistency.
Concept Development
The main concept featured black backgrounds with white text, ensuring visibility and aesthetic appeal. Consideration for nighttime visibility led to strategic placement of lighter elements within the design.
The Anomaly
Final Design
The final product consisted of 13 illustrated designs, each featuring the Arboretum logo and a consistent design language. The use of black backgrounds, white text, and squared designs contributed to a cohesive signage system.
Conclusion
The Signage System project resulted in the creation of 14 signs, accompanied by a map, user persona, project brief, and style guide. These elements work together to facilitate navigation and provide valuable information to visitors. The project also provided insights into the role of UX design, highlighting its importance in enhancing user experiences.
